Salt and Soul is a student-led initiative focused on coastal awareness, water stewardship, and public health education in Florida. We bring together data, tools, and local action to help people understand how the health of our seas is directly connected to our own, and how small, informed choices can make a real difference.
Explore fixed coastal monitoring sites and locations where recent water quality concerns have been reported. See where red tide, harmful algal blooms, bacteria, or pollution have been detected, and use the map to plan beach trips, study local ecosystems, or check conditions near your Florida community.
Small, everyday choices add up, affecting Florida’s local waterways and the oceans they feed. Small daily choices can reduce waste, preserve natural resources, and support healthier coastal ecosystems. Use these tools to see how your habits connect to coastal and ocean health.
Measure not only your tap water use but also the “virtual water” behind the food you eat, the electricity you use, and everyday products in your home. Discover where you can conserve and reduce your footprint.
Follow the journey of floating plastic from your neighborhood to the global ocean. See where plastic could travel over 20 years and how likely it is to reach the sea, making it clear how far-reaching the consequences of everyday waste can be.
Salt and Soul supports and amplifies organizations working on the ground to protect Florida’s coasts, seas, and waterways. These groups offer opportunities to volunteer, learn, and participate in meaningful environmental action across the region.

Hi, I am Diya Comar, a senior at The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, and the founder of Salt and Soul, a student-led environmental advocacy platform created to connect people with practical ways to protect their local environment. Growing up around Florida’s coastlines and waterways, I saw how issues like water pollution, plastic waste, coastal erosion, and habitat loss directly affected my community.
After participating in environmental sustainability and marine science programs, I wanted to turn what I had learned into something accessible and actionable. I created Salt and Soul as a website that combines environmental education with opportunities for community involvement. The platform features articles on environmental issues, interactive resources, local volunteer opportunities, environmental organizations, and ways for people to participate in conservation and advocacy.
My plan is to continue growing Salt and Soul from a website into a larger community initiative. I am currently exploring environmental microgrants to fund educational resources, community projects, outreach, and improvements to the platform.
Ultimately, my goal is to make environmental action more accessible, especially for young people in my community.
